No, I don't think they (out of hours visits) should be stopped because they're comprised of very small numbers of paying vistors genuinely interested in the monument and with a supervisor present. To compare that with 20,000 (variable) visitors at solstice is nonsense.

It's not a nonsense. People are allowed to touch the stones during these visits. If we're suggesting that any and all contact is an issue due to the cumulative effect, then it's perfectly reasonable to draw a parallel.

But LS.... my assertion is REASONABLE. There is no grounds for suspecting that a couple of people every few years climbing onto a 20 ton sarsen threatens to bring it toppling to the ground. That's just blindingly obvious. I also can't say beyond all doubt that my house won't spontaneously collapse the next time a crow lands on the chimney, but I can be reasonably certain that it won't happen.
