Yes, I think it's an unreasonable assumption on the grounds that neither of us is a structural engineer or a stone conservator with firsthand knowledge of the material (in this case a Stonehnege lintel) in question. In other words, always err on the side of safety.

I'm not really interested in health and safety issues - they're not a conservation concern.


That's your prerogative - I am (if not interested then certainly aware of health and safety issues). That probably comes from working for some sixteen years in museums. I would also disagree with you that health and safety issues are not a conservation concern (and I'm sure the barber-surgeon of Avebury would have thought so too :-)
