Re: Stonehenge Solstice: is there a risk?

If that isn't a real problem when considering Stonehenge conservation over the next 100, 1,000 or even 10,000 years, what is a real problem?

Behaviour at ancient sites for me comes down to an extension of a concept Douglas Hofstadter raised called Super Rationality. It is a Game Theory term but he expands it along social lines.

Don't walk on the grass signs are there to stop the grass being eroded, if one person does walk its not going to be eroded, but if everyone walks, the grass will soon be gone. Behave for the greater good even if your action on its own would not have a detrimental effect.

Unfortunately we can't rely on rationality so to protect and preserve it must be forced.

Yes one person, or 10 people or even 100 people on a lintel at Stonehenge won't knock it over. Sure 1,000 people inside the circle at Solstice only causes minimal erosian. This year. Last year. Next year. In 100 years? 1000?
