Last year at the Loch leven nature reserve despite numerous nest boxes being provided (by humans ) and plenty more natural , one pair of blue tits chose instead to build their nest in one of the metallic cigarette butt holders . Kestrels love motorways and there are probaly more kestrel nests adjoining motorways than rivers . Then again birds don't have concepts like genius loci.

By extension you could ask where did barn owls and bats nest before there were barns and belfries ;-)

Talking of blue tits, we saw one hopping in and out of a pub’s extractor fan (turned off of course) a couple of weeks ago, and a couple of months back a robin had built its nest between the potted plants in the garden centre. Nature can be very adaptable, so long as it isn’t pushed to the brink, and that’s what we should bear in mind. Personally I don’t have a problem with motorways or power stations of any kind, so long as their impact on the environment is minimized. Let’s face it without motorways it’d be hard to travel the length and breadth of the country to see the places and the people we want to see. And without power stations impossible to live the lifestyle most of us want to live.

Go to the relatively "wild " places of the UK and you might see a green sandpiper or a golden eagle and maybe not much else larger than insects (plenty of these )but in London the place is teeming with non human life from viruses upwards .
