Unexplained uneasy feeling
Jul 03, 2011, 18:35
Gladman started a very intersting thread, 'Why do we do this?' and there have been some wonderful replies thus far naming sites, places and what appeals about them etc etc, but I'd like to ask if amongst all the stone circles, barrows, cairns, henges and so forth you have visited there are any that you've had a bad feeling about?
I've only had that experience once and that was when I was on holiday with my parents when I was about 20. I wasn't new to this as I'd been into the subject since a boy investigating all the sites of my homeland in Jersey. Well we were touring around with a caravan and just come away from that village where they filmed 'The Prisoner' and looking for a place to park the caravan for the night when I saw a sign pointing up a track which just said, 'To the Burial Mound'.
We found a spot for the van just a few hundred yards away and while the folks were getting tea ready I thought I'd take our two dogs for a walk and find this track. I found it easily enough and started walking up it and was quite excited at what I might see. It was a beautiful evening but as I walked up this track which was quite open I began to feel somewhat uneasy. I had no reason to feel thet way I just did. Anyway I carried on and the dogs were being dogs and running here and there when suddenly about 200 yards away I could see 'the mound'. A hundred yards further on and there were two standing stones, one either side of the track which seemed to stop at this point. As I walked toward them I felt really bothered and my legs became very heavy and laboured. I was beginning to feel like I was tied to a long piece of elastic and the further I walked the tighter it bacame and it was trying to pull me back. But it was when both of my dogs stopped dead right between the two standing stones and started growling whilst looking toward the mound that I became really quite scared. It was still about 100yrds away in this field and in broad daylight but I just couldn't go on any further. I tried really hard but a 'force' seemed to be holding me back.
I've owned dogs since I was a kid and know that they are very perceptive and Rebel and Patch saw something that day that I couldn't but felt its evil presence.
I told my mother and father and dad was up for going and having a look for himself but I would have none of it and I've wondered about it ever since and have never experienced the likes again so I thought I'd ask if anyone else has experienced unusual and frightening feelings when visiting a particular site or landmark.

Yes... the Barrow Cat...

Mid 60s... Marlborough, Wiltshire, about 5 in the morning. Went looking for mushrooms for breakfast with a couple of friends. Down a farm track for a bit. Mangy old cat came out of a hedge. Took up a position about ten foot in front of us, on the lane. We walked on... cat in front... We’d stop, the cat’d stop. We’d walk on, so would the cat. Again and again. It went on for a bit and then left, under a gate. It looked back... we looked at it and followed.

Up on the ridge were a couple of round barrows. The cat went on, turning every now and then to check us out. We followed. Climbed one of the barrows and stood there. Early morning. Three of us – and the cat on the barrow.

Quiet, and then a howl... the thing leapt at a friend and landed on his shoulder, sitting, spitting and hissing there... True story (but worse, no mushrooms for breakfast).

Your story is a very descriptive piece of writing Roy - it drew me in and made made the hair prickle on my arms.

There has been discussion on this subject before and I think the consensus was that we often project our own 'stuff' onto sites when we visit - though it doesn't sound as as if this is what happened to you, which does feel like the paranormal.

The barrow-cat sounds like a feral animal that was either sick or hungry.

I don't have vivid imaginations of the supernatural, if I did then I would have experienced that at all the other sites I have visited over the years. This was a one-off on a normal day when I was taking my dogs at the time for a walk and I had absolutely no reason to feel uneasy...but I was!. All my life I have had a dog with me on site visits and this was no different...except for the outcome which has never been repeated.
As I've often said before, until recently I've only ever researched alone so that I can concentrate and not be distracted. I don't allow my mind do wander on to other things while I am studying. What happened that day was something real but beyond by comprehension .

Very interesting! I read something in Fortean Times some years ago on a similar subject, with lots of examples - some similar to yours! In some cases, Fairies were blamed. I've brrn careful not to dissensions them ever since. ;) (Actually, you can blame Terry Pratchett Fortean that! :D )

I'll delve the memory banks for my own experiences, of which I have had a few... :)

I do so hope Martinstraw sees this thread cos I *know* he has some astonishing stories that send a shiver down my spine every time!

That same 'force' did all it could to stop me when i first visited lock buie stone circle, it was night time (i was on my own) and it started funny with me stepping in a puddle up to my waist, got more scary when a stag screamed in my face (it was so loud) from about 2 meters away, i run away but carried out right round to the cairn circle, i got to the track leading to the circle, it was raining and dark when i felt a hand on my arm, all of a sudden i was flying though the air, i hit the grassy side of the path quite hard, i was shitting myself.... all i wanted was to go back, but some strengh inside wouldn't let me, so i carried on , really scared, i got to the fence around the circle and standing stones, i was that scared i just climbed over the fence and hugged the stone thinking if i can just get to the circle everything will be all right, i ran though the puddles to the next stone ,even more scared ,i saw the circle though the rain and night and went for it ,i entered the circle and felt what can only be described as terror, it was horrible, i left and got back to the van as fast as i could, i went back in lovely weather the next day and it was beautiful.

Nope, didn't see any of those either as in those days they weren't too keen to 'come out!' :D

that's mad isn't it?

The first time i visited callanish at night i felt really welcome ,the next night when i walked up i felt the stones were a group of people talking about me and i wasn't welcome, i went in anyway and it felt horrible i ran to the van (all the days were normal), on the 3rd night i went back not knowing what to expect but put it like this i felt like i was been hugged all night so it's safe to say it was all right.
