What I know is that with the same evidence, a "jury" of 80 people voted overwhelmingly for a prehistoric date, which shows this is just interpretation and not conclusive by any means. Yep, you are right, which some direct archaeological evidence there can be no firm date given. That cuts both ways. I would say, just going on it's appearance that the Cerne Giant is more likely to be Romano British than it is 16th/17th century.

Do not discount the pience of Roman brick found in it's footings. Ask yourself what was it doing up the hill? Scant evidence I know, but no moreso than any other evidence.
