Do you mean the 1694 date? If so, it was the date that the Giant was cleaned at the expense of "three shillings". So the possibilities are that it was made a few years earlier, was never cleaned or no earlier cleanings were recorded. Bit open ended and disappointing that no archaeological dating was attempted. Still, I don't think anyone is going to hold out now for a prehistoric origin
