Yeah, certainly if cut back to reveal the chalk. But other methods may have been employed on other bedrocks perhaps, such as maybe laying out the shapes in stone and lime-washing them. But then again, I don't know if lime-wash was in use during that period and know of no examples that are laid out in stone.... so I could just be chewing air really!
