I'm no archaeologist and am often dubious about their methods and findings especially when they wreck sites. However, this research looked pretty sound to me. The idea is that when the figure was first dug, a greater amount of chalk was dislodged than would be done so by erosion. This chalk finished up at the bottom of the hill below the figure. It was shown to be a clearly defined layer of larger than average chunks of chalk. This was taken to be the layer from the cutting of the figure. Beneath this layer were found the remains of many land snails. One of them was introduced by the Romans and the other was intoduced in medieval times. So the figure had to have been cut after the second type of snail was present in the turf.

QED Anyone who wants to continue to believe that Wilmington is prehistoric must do so by an act of faith alone.
