No, I don't see the ancients (or not-so-ancients) doing anything for the sake of distracting/destroying evidence lol... just saying that as with anything else no-one was actually there and this chalk could have come from anywhere, that's all...
The carving of the figure may have occurred over a period of time for instance, starting with one bit (take your choice here) and building the rest around it. This way the stuff removed would be spread over time as well as the landscape...
I would be interested in theories looking at art and comparisons with the style of the designers - was this considered?

If it wasn't for people like me, theories would be fact by now ;-)
