On the programme they said that the dating technique used for the Long Man was similar to that used for the Uffington Horse. What they did at the Long Man site was to excavate at the bottom of the hill until they reached undisturbed ground/bedrock. The theory is that pieces of chalk dug out from the hillside during construction of the figure would have been washed down the hill. So, by examining the layers for evidence of chalk fragments they were able to decide which layer corresponded to the first work on the hill. A sample of soil from immediately beneath this layer was then analysed by two independent techniques. One was thermoluminescence and the other was snail species identification.
