Well, basically, what they did right, was, like... Oh.Proper speak. OK
*Ahem*
They went the bottom of Long Man, dug a trench, saw the layer of chalk that had rolled down there when he was dug, dated the soil underneath it by measuring how long it was since the particles had seen sunlight (science bit summat to do with lasers don't ask me) AND they looked at the landsnails in the layer and found one that had been introduced post medieval.
