Fair enough, but it would seem a bit unlikely that the spoils would be carted off elsewhere - and other, later, spoils brought from another site.
But man wouldn't that confuse the archeologists!
As for it being a landslide, it was pointed out that the nature of the chalk chippings was compatible with digging remains ( see, I paid attention! ).
Presumably they have to dig down to earlier levels and examine those to give creedence to their findings.
