Wilmington and Uffington were chalk tested and dated by snails beneath the layers of chalk disturbed when they were made

Cerne was not tested in that way, but available documents gave no indication of his existence before 1694.... Perhaps he was made in the Bronze Age, but no one cleaned him or noticed him. Perhaps the monks got off by ogling him from their drafty cells. I don't know. I just watched dear old Aubrey and was convinced.
