English Heritage's NMR Monument Type Thesaurus describes "stone setting" thus:
"An arrangement of one or more standing stones. Use particularly for isolated recumbent stones, or where original form of monument unclear. Use specific type where known."
It's used for sites which don't conform to the usual categories.
I haven't found a classic example, mainly because they're generally ignored by contributors to TMA and the Portal.
For instance, there's over fifty sites on Exmoor officially described as "stone setting"; few look for them, even less find them.

I've seen stone settings in Wales, too.
