Many have a history in myth and lore. Many don't.

Some are still used today as a place of pilgrimage.

I couldn't find Croagh Patrick on TMA using the search engine, that has to be a contender. Going towards Wesport even when seen from a great distance, it leaps out of the surrounding mountains and landscape as it's so different and shouts "Hey, look, I'm a quartz pyramid!" or at least that's what it did to me. I hadn't got a clue what it was aside from its name in the road atlas until I got onto the 'net on my return home and found some further info.

In my experience, if somewhere's sacred, it lets you know.
