When I say we never looked back, I mean we never doubted the generally fated-ness of the getting together. We looked back for the stones, and sideways and up and down and whilst squinting, but they hid. It was a good lesson in the capriciousness of these things.
As a poor excuse, It was before we discovered pathfinder maps. Successful searches for cup-n-ring rocks on Doddington moor with a landranger are not for the unpractised, or so we found. Thankfully you can't miss the circle ("rems of"), that was a good example of how to get hooked. It prompted my first really good bout of "Who put this wall in the way? Why! Where is the rest? There must be more! Is that something? I'll just nip up that hill over there just in case, etc. "
As we now have the requisite scale map, I think you're right. We used the c-n-r motif on the wedding cake so we do really owe them a visit. It would be a good way to discover if Iv'e got any better at homing in on meaningful rocks.
