Hmm, perhaps you're right. We discourage metal detectors just because it implies digging, and like has been stated, no digging or damaging the enviroment is allowed. I was using them more as an example of how popular an activity geocaching has become. How about some of the press here:

Few months behind, and being the press is the press, not all the stories are totally accurate. I abhor the treasure hunt slant many seem to take, for most of us, its the journey and the view, not the trinkets. The trinkets are for the kids.
