Presumably the "grownups" you refer to are the ones using the word "fuck" a lot, and variously threatening to urinate in caches or kill the participants of geocaching? I'm sorry but your language is that of the school playground and the lack of reasoned argument does little to suggest academy.

"Sad little hobbyists" would seem equally applicable to all parties. The fact is that the general public would see little distinction between stone-spotters, bucket-spotters or train-spotters. Bickering over who's the geekiest of the geeky, seems doomed only to reinforce this perception.

Knowing Dan and Pid, I'm sure the original posting was made in good faith, under the assumption that you guys were the sort of people who liked to get out and discover interesting and possibly unsung areas of the English countryside.

Had they first read some posts (eg those about churches), they may have realised just how narrow are the limits of your interest and tolerance, and may not have wasted their time.
