Virtual caches are spot on. They encourage people to visit places and learn about them, and respect the fact that other people might want to visit them too. But it seems like it's too late for geocachers or anyone else to promote them alone, because there are already thousands of boxes waiting to be tripped over.
Most people who are just looking for a box full of tricks aren't there to learn about the countryside, surely.
I totally take your point, knowign these grid references encourages people to visit sites they might otherwise not visit. Which is good, but only if they respect the place when they get there. Or the places won't be there much longer.
