If as a race you were plagued with ill health and a short life span and to a degree of lower intelligence, then you could be led into believing almost anything I would imagine if it sounded too good to miss out on! Just the thought of it would carry you through and you never get to know if it's true until it's to late...allegedly!!

Aye, very true Mr S. Also worth keeping in mind that the average Mr and Mrs Joe Public, up to the late 16th century in this country, were not only illiterate they weren't even surrounded by the kind of audio/visual stimulus (information) we so take for granted today. Imagine what that must have been like, and the overwhelming impact on Joe and his missuses when entering a church or cathedral – the ‘celestial’ music, the stained glass windows and richly painted walls – it would have been close to a psychedelic experience and they would have swallowed hook line and sinker whatever they were told in that sort of atmosphere.

There are odds and bobs fragments of painted walls in a few churches but those in Pickering Church, Yorkshire, are a reminder of what it must have been like all across the land and the power such paintings, and the priesthood, had on the poor.
