Especially given that in days gone by, healthcare was something you couldn't get by nipping into the nearest GP's surgery or A&E. Before the concept of the Magic Bullet, even the slightest perceived improvement in health would have been more noticeable. Even if it resulting from some folkloric placebo effect.
