Yes, but the bad stuff would be down to the rise of consumerism, which is an even more recent thing than capitalism. Still about money though, and invented by capitalism to enable it to get an even tighter grip.

And even more recently, the admen have come up with an even more pernicious wheeze: designer goods.

Rant mode: driving past my local school, seeing hundreds of kids, each with a back pack, and ALL with a big name on the back - Addidas, Puma, Head and one other (can't remember) and nothing else. Making cheap and cheerful bags ain't rocket science but these kids wouldn't buy them as someone has convinved them to overpay for a name. The market forces are being distorted by people who've sussed how to get a supernormal profit.

It's an old fashioned view, but money really is the root of all evil, from war in Iraq to the inexorable "low brow TV makes more money" phenomenon that the Yanks have been smart enough to know as a truth for decades and which we're now enthusiastically realizing here.
