Jonathan Aitken once tried to sue the Guardian for libel. He had a very arguable case. But he lied about the Ritz Hotel, airplane tickets and generated fictional movements of members of his family whom he co-opted in taking the witness stand. He simply wanted to clear an embarrassing minor hurdle which may not have impacted severely on his arguable case. His credibility was ruined. His manoeuvre mean't that anything he could say was henceforth tainted so he no choice but to drop the case and hope for the best. After the worst which did happen,he asked Michael Howard if he could either join the Tories or stand again for Parliament, to which the then leader said No.
