Re: Christ as Makroanthropos
Oct 17, 2009, 19:09
What I miss in this topic is the hermetic and gnostic background of the Christ concept. Ptolemaios I The Saviour (ca 367 - 283 BCE) - the first Greek pharaoh of Egypt, was called Christos - the Chosen and Anointed One. He underwent pharaonic initiations, which resulted in psychic identification with Osiris - the Soul of Egypt. Nowadays, the pope Benedictus XVI is saying frequently - "All the World is waiting for the Christ" - using the gnostic concept of same. The DIVINE CHILD, WHO DIED TO GIVE US NEW LIFE was widely known as a Giant, from the body of which the world had been built. The pope seems to mean that Christianity supplies Humanity with the most developed concept of Christ - the Soul of the World.

One of direct antecedents of Christianity was Orphism with its Dionysos, who dies to live within us (and Nature). A good introduction to the latter can be found in K.Kerenyi - "Dionysos: The Archetype of the Indestructible Life". W.K.C. Guthrie - "Orpheus and Greek Religions" is still the decent basis of knowledge in that topic. Those guys were classic heroes of thought of the XX c; quite right. But what do you want; we live in the time of epigons. None of them seems ready to "march against Thebes" today.

Now; Jesus (Jehoszua) was a holy man in Israel, who probably underwent king-initiations analogous to the pharaonic ones. Calling him the King of Israel would mean Jesus was considered in his close circle as embodying the Soul of Israel. In later mysticism, he was called "The Second Adam". If we took it for the kabbalistic "Adam Kadmon", we would be probably right. The fact that Jesus was already quite early treated as a man, who best represented Christ - the Soul of the World, seems to witness to the origin of basic Christian ideas in the Jewish diaspore of Alexandria.
