Yeah, Columba was on the way to convert King Bruide of the Picts. He stopped off on the way to subdue and banish Nessie (another serpent legend) and when he got to the dun of king Bruide his court druid had barred the gate to Columba. Columba used magic to open the gates and fight a duel with the druid, which he won. The king was so impressed he converted to christianity, and so of course all his people did too.
There's a great Scottish history book out now by the School of Scottish Studies which details something they call the "historicising" of the past. They unlock the polital situations at the time of the writing of books like Adomnan's, and detail the ancient authors' circumstances and suchlike too, showing why some things were put into histories which clearly weren't true. Kind of an unlocking of the spin doctoring going on. Quite a revealing read. 6 volumes starting in 747ad.
