Surely the combination of floor space, itself dependent on available space and extent of funds, compared to roof height gives ratios that were drawn up to make sure the building didn't fall down!
Much the same way as researchers have found the most likely angle of the roof on iron age roundhouses so it doesn't collapse, the rain runs off and the smoke escapes. Practicality is all!

Sorry Cropredy, I'd love these divine dimensions to be true but can't help feeling early builders were more interested in doing a good job so the Abbot didn't have them excommunicated!
