It's much more subtle than the distance of the earth from the sun. I heartily recommend reading <i>Just Six Numbers<i> by Martin Rees (ISBN - 0-297-84297-8 [Weidenfield & Nicholson])

In this he discusses (surprise, surprise) just six numbers all of which make life possible and any variation in any one of these would cause it to stop. These numbers are the constants that keep emerging in all areas of science.

Being a mathematician at heart I can see what he's saying quite easily, but in no way can he, through this, prove that a different form of life would have evolved if <i>some</i> of these numbers were different. It's just that <Bones>"Life As We Know It, Jim"</Bones> would not have been possible.
