Re: reality

People need the illusion of solid ground on which to stand, which is why such tales are dismissed as "tall". Knowing that everything you call "the laws of nature" can be turned on its head at a moment's notice is, to most people, a disturbing thought, not at all condusive to the sense of security that people need in order to be able to continue functioning in day-to-day life. The fallacy in that is that we're not talking about laws of nature being broken, but about laws of nature that are not yet fully understood. There's no such thing as "the supernatural", because ALL is a part of nature.

Colin Wilson also points to the triviality of paranormal experiences when attempting to explain the blind eye that is usually turned to them. The best example is the petty and everyday nature of the messages "channeled" from "the spirits of the dead" to their relations, at spiritualist seances. Further examples would include: a non-existent farmer walking up a hill, an exploding glass or fruitbowl, Lethbridge being hurled flat on his face... none of it has the feeling of an Earth-shattering revelation. Feelings can be deceptive, though. Sometimes the most trivial details contain the most awesome revelations. Like Archimedes observing his bath overflowing, or Newton watching the apple fall to Earth.
