That's the killer counter-argument that's always put forward against anyone who says "it looks like a plan".
So unless we find someone's blueprints it'll always stay as a 50-50 chance.

On the other hand, a similar argument and counter argument has long remained insoluble for the question "are we alone?" - there was an even chance that the earth was a huge fluke or common as muck. But with planets now being discovered in sackloads that one has been resolved and it seems that it's likely to turn out to be common as muck.
