I agree with 99% of all that, but I must add that your scenario is disappearing thank ye gods!

Also, whereas archaeos sometimes dismiss things en-masse because someone says they should, it is all too common for Antiquarians to ACCEPT something because someone said they should.

I could stand you on a hilltop just outside Dublin and point out the Triple Goddess in the landscape. I could write a bloody good book on it actually, but it'd all be supposition. And I bet a large chunk of readers wouldn't even question what I'd written.

Both sides are equally guilty of failing to hear the other side ... and yes, I know they started it :-)
