The Manpower thing
Jul 02, 2003, 23:36
There are several estimates for the labour needed to build Newgrange, which I could look up, but I won't. One goes by the ability of the local land to support X amount of people extra to the amount that are needed to tend it. This estimate ends up with the designer not seeing the final product, because it took 80 years.

Another takes the line that they all stopped to build it and probably ended up killing half of themselves because they didn't tend the fields etc ... hence why the Boyne monuments are the last in their line. This one sees completion in a few years.

Pollen samples from various layers in the mound (apparently it was built in at least three stages, because at several points in the layers grass had regrown to cover it) indicate a not very crop-growing society. Best guess at building it is about 20-30 years I'd say, which is a hell of a commitment.

The Asthetics of Hill Forts. Can't wait to read that one :-)
