the Swallowhead was dedicated to the goddess of turnips, and turnips had been offered there continuously from time immemorial, we would not object to the place being overrun with the things today... nor would we be having this discussion.
True, especially on a saturday afternoon, but surely it is the symbolic need to revere water that is at stake here! Most of the "curses" on lead tablets found in the hot water spring at Bath are very humdrum - he/she stole my whatever, may he be rent asunder and suffer death by a thousand cuts. Faith is personal, and selfish, we "wish" at wells, mostly for wealth, wellbeing and finding love - expect the gods wish that we should think of more noble causes.. and no I don't think there were any turnips around in neolithic times.
As for "megalithic worship" now that is another whole subject and I 'm not going down that road - fireworks exploding everywhere.. ;)
