Not sure about the actual effect, but the measuring of it seems to be called photothermal radiometry. A quick bit of googling indicates that it's infra red emissions given out as silicon bearing materials cool down. Sounds like the right kinda thing, though it's usually used to look for structural bother in buildings etc.
I tried using the IR function on a camcorder at Avebury, but it wasn't sensitive enough. From the look of it, you need some pretty specialist equipment.
