If one really wants to confront their own position on animals and rights Peter Singer’s Animal Liberation is still the place to start. 38 years old and as powerful and coherent as it ever was.

Edit: If Singer's utilitarianism is difficult to stomach (seems to be close to Morrissey's position) then Tom Regan's The Case For Animal Rights (a sprightly 31 years old) is equally powerful and possibly more fundamental in its core values.
