As one who cheerfully spends his working day slaughtering animals I think Morrissey should be applauded for his position. Abstention from moral judgment is itself a very odd moral judgment, one that seems increasingly pervasive. Too much attention is paid to the dry fact humping dumbing down and not the true crisis of intellectual poverty and poor reasoning. Issues are avoided, the unpleasant or morally difficult is simply hidden and deemed rude to mention or even acknowledge.

Is he a mindless prophet, handing out moral precepts to unquestioning followers? His remarks seem calculated to avoid this. He is not simply saying “Isn’t evil bad” (which seems to be the level of debate we have reached in these social media fed days of desperate consensus) but makes our agreement difficult, makes clear that this is not an easy issue. Morality is a personal as well as an intellectual matter. The retreat into pointless abstraction is the real enemy and one that pronouncements such as Morrissey’s help to combat.
