I actually think he's probably made a fair few converts over the years. People are made vegetarians by having the concept of vegetarianism thrust into their lives and upsetting their inherited values. Not in an abstract "t'happens over there so I'm told but it's got nout t'do with me here" kind of way, but by being put into direct confrontation with the idea. All of this is Morrissey reiterating, in various sledgehammer ways, that just because something isn't of my species doesn't mean it's worth less than me due to its differences. I wouldn't necessarily call that misanthropic so much as inclusionary. He may have his own inferiority complex wrapped up in there somewhere, but it really does feel a bit like walking through an abattoir every time you step out of your door as a vegetarian. You can either shrink into yourself and never bring it up in company, despite how often you're pressed, or use that mounting anger to turn yourself into a force of nature.
