Useful vs useless

Thanks, yes, there are certain patterns in the movement of the stars that require detailed knowledge that no ordinary farmer would have any idea about. As I said, the patterns of the moon, as opposed to the sun, escapes ordinary comprehension. Someone has always been necessary for that. Whether the stories (s)he was spinning were merely that or they also had a 'practical' use for the ordinary farmer (among his most common 'solar' tasks) is something which was, most possibly, in ancient times, a grey area between the mythical and the ordinary, an indistinguishable mixture of both.
