Without arguing the toss over word meanings - the point I'm making is that people who work with the tides know about them without needing to know anything about astronomy. The two really high spring tides that occur each month would be known to occur at the full and new moons. Yes that would be signalled by observation of lunar phases just as the neap tides would be by the quarter moons. If that is what you mean by astronomy then we are in agreement.
