I think a sensible farmer (or, more to the point, a farmer whose very survival depends on getting things right) learns to read every sign he can get, and to know that some signs aren't always reliable. Look at this year for instance. Seeing when snowdrops appear doesn't necessarily tell you when lambs do. A calendar might be just as important for that.
