Unless the druids and priests themselves were so utterly self-convinced of their own 'foolish' stories that they REALLY believed in them themselves and it was all a big Collective Sham!

Going back to comparisons with today, (and we can't generalize here), one can't deny that some priests themselves are so completely imbued with faith that they often lose the plot like anyone under certain other conditions also would.
