As Ike mentioned the Severn Estuary, and others are talking tides, one of the 13 wonders of Britain according to Nennius was of course the great bore that travels up the estuary. The spring bore this year was not spectacular, but the stories around its occurence can be found here... http://tidal-bore.tripod.com/england/severn_wonder.html.
It is a great crossing point for prehistoric people, romans and all who came after, especially the "holy parasites" and the first monastic establishments.
