I've been having a ponder whilst reading the interesting stuuf being posted here. (This thread, incidentally, is the kind of thing It's nice to see, pondering what was going on in the minds of the ancients based on reasoning rather than dogma)
My heads all full of half-formed thoughts on various tangents. But there's one connection that keeps cropping up in my head: iIf we're talking about rock art and monuments, the one thing that seems to be a consistent feature of all these prehistoric remains is that their chosen position in the landscape is chosen in relation to natural features, be they hills, rivers, strange rock formations or other monuments.
What does this imply about the preoccupations of their creators?
