I'm sure for the vast majority of people you're entirely right, most ppl throughout the ages wouldn't have given a stuff about anything other than day to day living. In terms of peeps that built these monuments, beliefs obviously had a varying degree of importance, pretty much like the building of cathedrals in the mediaeval period. No doubt, like today there'll be some folks with beliefs that were so strong that life & survival was secondary to what came afterwards.

A rather extreme example of this today (& I apologise if I offend anyone) would be a suicide bomber.

I don't think its too much to suggest that in antiquity for some people, probably a tiny minority (like today) that beliefs were paramount above anything else.
