Is it possible this lichen grows on the slimy trails that slugs and such leave behind? I've seen some pretty heavy duty slime on stones before, maybe this slime is full of wholesome goodness for lichens to thrive on? Could explain some naturally occuring cruvy, swirly lines of growth....
