I don't believe that the carvers were attempting to portray owls , if they were they would have done a much better job . Their ancestors had exceptional skills at representational art but British and Irish RA carvers were doing something else. For much the same reason I don't believe the other motifs were inspired by lichen , tree rings , water or life cycles.
