The thing is that we are taught to see two dimensional images of faces and figures. A three dimensional rock may very well suggest a human face or figure to prehistoric perceptions, but not a 2D one. We - in our acquired culture - are much more likely to see face and figure images simply because we have been conditioned to see such from birth and are daily exposed to hundreds of images. Just think how many 2D faces you see in a day - on TV, magazines, advertising plus the 3D ones of real people. Then consider how many faces prehistoric people might see in a day.
