The majority of our predisposition to recognise facial simulacra seems to be the result of nature rather than nurture. The area of cortex which holds the 'facial recognition template' is in a bit of cortex that isn't particularly mutable. It's old cortex, probably goes back to early hominid at least, if not even further (mebbe frogs have a frog recognition template?).

But I think I see the point you're making Littlestone, a tendency to perceive faces doesn't have to lead to the placement of any significance. I'll agree with the comment Jacksprat makes elsewhere on this thread, that our ancestors may have noticed these faces, but that the faces would have been afforded a lesser (or at least different) significance from things more directly connected to the practicalities of living.
