The Duke St Workshop – Tales of HP Lovecraft / Cabin 28. Not sure how I haven’t come across this lot before, as they’re right up my strasse, and will be up yours too if you're into the Advisory Circle/Pye Corner Audio/Belbury Poly axis. Atmospheric, radiophonic electronica, great stuff: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wSXDDXViIXM

Laddio Bolocko – Live & Unreleased 1997-2000. Not the name of a Viz character, but experimental post-hardcore types from NYC, two of whom went on to form the excellent Psychic Paramount. It’s noisy. And experimental. And I haven’t made it all the way through yet.

Field Music – Commontime. Hmm, polished. Perhaps a little too polished.

Baron – Torpor. If, like me, you worship at the shrine of Talk Talk, you really need to hear this: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3sgJCOxKCfg

Diagonal – s/t. Alex Crispin from Baron’s first band. For the most part, this is an homage to the likes of Gentle Giant, Crimson etc. Good, but rarely rises above its influences, and in retrospect, Crispin’s strange, choral vocals are perhaps its most interesting element: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RbiZAin9Jbg

Loop – A Gilded Eternity. When this first came out, my attention had wandered away from Loop a bit into early techno stuff, so this didn’t make a big impression at the time. Suffice to say, on re-listening more recently, it sounds like a blueprint for the future. Oh, and Hawkwind (though don’t tell Robert Hampson that). Astounding sounds, appalling title… https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eckF_Rcsk3w

Throwing Muses – s/t. Another re-listen that had me similarly thinking, “blimey, now HERE’s a benchmark that bands should be measuring themselves against”, daft though it is to think that way. This is such an amazingly intense song: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6MwAShC1rnI

Captain Beefheart – The Spotlight Kid. Have never really dug the Capt as much as I feel I should, but enjoyed this.

Live:

Suuns/Jerusalem In My Heart – Oslo, London. This was pretty cool. JIMH is a Canadian-Lebanese bloke who mixes traditional Syrian singing with electronic noise and electric bouzouki wig-outs. Did a collab with Suuns earlier this year, which they re-lived here, the heavier stuff being particularly marvellous. Didn’t sound like Clinic ;-0
