or at least the atomistic viewpoint might. Holistic might recognise that a classic soul voice had flaws mixed with ability to convey tune and, moreover emotion. I'm not that familiar with Duffy but thinking about somebody like Bobby bland you get the utter grittiness of a Howlin wolf mixed with the smoothness of Sam cooke. i think others of the ilk are similar if not quite so extreme.
a marketing board approximation of the 'real' (which came about by chance to great extent & then got trained through gospel choirs etc) winds you up with something rather too analogous of Vic Reeves idea of club singing.
